In Loving Memory of James e. Melton jr.

It’s hard to put into words what it means to

introduce this devotional, written by a man who was

not only a dear friend but a brother in every sense of

the word. I first met James in Miami, where our

paths crossed in ministry. From the moment we met,

I knew he was someone special. We served side by

side on the same ministry leadership/vision team,

and I had the honor of being his principal when he

taught High School in Miami, Florida. I was his

Administrator, but in so many ways, he was a teacher to us all.

Dr. Sanford had a unique ability to teach us how

to live and love out loud—his life was a beautiful

testimony of what it means to love God and people

with passion and authenticity.

This devotional is more than just words on a

page; it’s a way to keep his voice alive. It’s a

continuation of the lessons he so faithfully poured

into us.

James wasn’t just a remarkable church

business administrator; he was a prophetic voice for

the present time. His wisdom, faith, and unwavering

love for God’s people left a lasting impact on both the

ministry and the school. He had an incredible gift of

speaking truth with grace, much like the biblical

Nathan—bold, insightful, and always aligned with

God’s heart. To me, he was affectionately “Dr.

Sanford,” a name that reflected the deep respect and

admiration I held for him. He, in turn, called me

“Sister-Momma,” a reflection of the family bond we

shared. We laughed together, cried together, and

walked through life’s joys and challenges side by side.

And while our hearts are still broken by his

absence, we find comfort in living out the words he

left us with at his funeral: “I hope you dance.” So, as

you journey through these pages, may you hear his

voice echoing in your heart, encouraging you to

embrace life with faith, courage, and joy. May his

words inspire you to dance through life’s challenges,

trusting that God’s grace is always sufficient.

“Dr. Sanford”, your legacy lives on. We are

dancing because of you. With love and gratitude,

“Sister-Momma” -Archalena Coats
